About KLT

The Kennebec Land Trust service area in Central Maine is within a relatively unfragmented landscape of forests and river systems. Conservation within this particular geography helps to build resilience to climate change and revitalize the connection between healthy functioning ecological systems and healthy human communities and economies.

Maine is the most forested state in the nation and is at the heart of the Northern Appalachian/Acadia forest which extends from the Adirondacks to the Canadian Maritimes. This forest serves as essential habitat for much of the biodiversity of the Northeast and is the largest remaining swath of temperate mixed deciduous and broadleaf forest in the world. The diversity of habitats not only within the forest but also among the abundant lakes and streams provide a home to an incredible diversity of mammals, birds, fish and amphibians as well as the people in our local communities. The Kennebec River and some of its many tributaries flow through the heart of the Kennebec Land Trust region and the land trust’s conservation efforts support resilient ecosystems.

KLT recognizes that our conservation lands are the past and current homelands of the Wabanaki people. We recognize the Wabanaki’s long relationship with the lands that we call Maine and acknowledge the ongoing and important role they have in shaping the future.

Established in 1988, KLT now has over 1000 household members. Over the past 36 years, we have partnered with private landowners and communities in 21 towns to conserve more than 7,600 acres through donations, purchases, and conservation easements. We have constructed 56 miles of trails on KLT lands and we organize hikes, paddles, bird walks, and outdoor photography and painting workshops that encourage residents and visitors to learn about and enjoy Central Maine’s natural landscape.

In 2013, KLT and the Maine Forest Service and state-wide conservation partners developed the Local Wood WORKS (LWW) partnership. LWW partners share a commitment to sustainable forestry, land stewardship, conservation of both working woodlands and ecological reserves, strong and resilient local economies and communities, thoughtful land use planning that includes the consideration of the need for   work force housing in our communities, and energy conservation. In 2020 KLT established the Baldwin Hill Conservation Cemetery, a separate 501(c)(13) non-profit. The Cemetery seeks to provide ecologically sound burial for people of all traditions and to serve as a model of green burial practices in Maine and beyond.
